Sarah Kelly

I am a painter who expresses the feeling of big skies, wide open spaces and the effects of light on water. Being outside is important to me and it is where I find most of my inspiration whether sailing, kayaking or cycling. Often a fleeting moment can be so exciting and the joy I feel at witnessing it is a powerful motivator to paint.
My preferred medium is oils as they suit my way of working. I use the indirect method as this helps me to achieve depth especially when suggesting water. I like
to develop a piece of work through the build up of layers, and I particularly like to use the transparent and opaque qualities of different paints. The drying time needed using this method allow me time to reflect of the progress of the piece. I know when it is resolved when I feel I can walk into the scene.

Gill Williams

Most of my life I have been fortunate enough to have lived in Dorset where I discovered that the Isle of Purbeck is an inspiration of natural and man-made wonders. I hope my work conveys something of the magic of this unique county. The colours of the seasons are important to me as well as the movement of the sky and sea along the Dorset coastline. I try to communicate the changes in mood, using the freedom and translucency of watercolour overlaid with pen and ink detail.

Gina Marshall

Gina is an artist from Weymouth but now lives in Swanage. In 2013 she began drawing and painting, making great progress over a period of 6 months of 1:1 tuition. During the 1:1 tuition she dabbled with ink, and loving the vivid colours, used it on watercolour paper both painting and drawing with ink on this surface.

She has taken inspiration from wood cuts, doodle art and pointillism but also uses a great deal of imagination. She is inspired by the Dorset coastline and deconstructs the elements to build them back up again into defined, strongly delineated areas filled with repetitive motifs.

She also uses humour in her pictures through the choice of motifs and simplification of their form.

Juliet West

Since gaining a BA (Hons) in Fine art from the Surrey institute of art and design I have become a painter, an art teacher and a mother to three rambunctious children.

Over the years I've enjoyed experimenting with many styles of painting; from the naïve to the realistic and various techniques in between. More recently I've been creating work in a place for which I have a special affection.

Inspired by the beauty of the Purbeck coastline, and particularly Swanage (where I am fortunate enough to spend part of the year), my current work seeks to capture the landscape in both abstract and representational ways.

I aim to create work that although recognisable, gives the viewer more of an impression of the place as well as imparting a sense of the handcrafted. With this in mind, I purposely stop working on my paintings before they become too polished.

Kim Day

Kimberley Day is a working artist who lives on the Isle of Purbeck on the south coast of England. Her abstracted landscapes are a response to her local environment which she regularly walks, cycles and swims through. These ever-changing emotional landscapes are described through her application of paint and pastels in an attempt to capture both the literal place but also the feeling and energy of the trees, the sky and earth — the vibration and magic that is held in the light, the soundlessness when lost in the forest or crossing empty but well trodden paths. Endeavouring to use a palette that expresses the tonal harmony of our natural environment and enable her to share this meditative process with you — here living on that infinite boundary between land and sea.

Rebecca Drury

Rebecca Drury is a Dorset-based printmaker. Her colourful linoprints are inspired by Dorset’s wildlife, coast and countryside, and occasionally also by her children and work in biodiversity conservation. Her limited edition linocuts are meticulously carved and printed by hand in Rebecca's home studio using traditional block printing techniques. Some are monochrome prints using one block, while others are produced by applying several layers of colour using multiple blocks or a reduction printing approach.

Holly Butler

Hey, I’m Holly; a local abstract artist creating contemporary acrylic artwork with an atmospheric ‘calm’.

Growing-up on the South Coast has undoubtedly influenced my work; every one of my paintings has its own story, each a one-of-a-kind and all inspired by that deep breath you take as you reach the seashore.

Rich, layered textures and a soothing colour palette create eye-catching depth; something new to see at every glance and a lovely addition to any coastal lover’s home.

Eleanor Spalding

Eleanor was born and raised between London and Dorset. After graduating in Fashion Design from Edinburgh College of Art she began a career within the Costume department for Film and TV.
She has recently returned to Swanage and inspired by the local landscape, draws in oil bar pastels ‘en plein air’ enjoying the energetic, immediate and visceral quality it brings to her work. Her drawings evoke the atmosphere of the Dorset landscape through expressive mark making and the use of rich, natural colours. She often explores the use of white space, allowing the landscape to appear like an explosion out of the frame.
Her artwork invites the viewer to use their imagination and personal emotional response to interpret their vision of the contemporary landscapes.

Caroline Tucker

Caroline trained at the Arts University, Bournemouth and then went on to gain a BA (Hons) degree in Contemporary textile design in Cardiff. She began working for a print and embroidery design studio in London where she created designs for high street fashion.

6 years ago after having her first son she started to spend more time working on bright, energetic and colourful acrylic paintings.

The inspiration for her vibrant and quirky imagery comes from a love of the countryside and beautiful coastline where she lives.

Kasia Zagloba

Kasia have been working in architecture for many years but since moving to Dorset she reignited her artistic passions. She uses soft pastels as her favourite medium and the local landscapes as inspiration. Many of her pieces are directly influenced by the walks she takes

Jessamy Hawke

Jessamy is UK-based illustrator and landscape artist, working in watercolour and gouache. She is interested in connecting drawing with poetry and

literature, as well as using illustration to document her experience of a landscape.

Her paintings express a sense of place through line, texture, and colour, drawing on the British countryside. From patterns of fields, trees, and hedgerows, to the unique rock formations along the coast and in the mountains. She hopes to engage the viewer with the landscape as she experiences it, basing much of her work on drawing and painting on location.

Emma Jane

Using eco- friendly materials is a very important part of my process, nothing goes to waste. Everything that has been forgotten or destined for the tip I will try to make use of, reclaim, recycle and re-love.

Scavenging in the wood pile is always inspiring, finding used wood with the most unusual grains, colours and textures that I can re-use and which create new ideas and opportunities for my creativity.

Back at my studio I look through my finds more closely, I rough sand them to remove any dirt and discover the woods unique imperfections. Once I have gained a better understanding of what I have to work with I then set about cutting it into pieces if needed. Whilst keeping as much of the character and individuality as possible, the wood will dictate where it should be cut or what shape this piece was meant to be.

My background colours are then mixed up in small batches and applied to the wood, this is where I decide to leave the best areas free of background colour, thus giving the wood a chance to exhibit its natural beauty and distinctiveness which play an important role within my paintings.

From here I then paint my chosen flora to bring the whole piece alive. Some of my flowers that I paint are simplified to portray their delicate and fragile nature. The bold statement of my sometimes heavy wood pieces trigger the curiosity, but carry a natural beauty because they celebrate our imperfections and differences.

This gave me the chance to develop my appreciation for detail in art and experiment with artistic styles and techniques, culminating in finding my love for watercolour painting. I have been painting with watercolour and gouache ever since, now drawing on the beautiful landscapes and inspiring nature around me.
